MAPAQ, Quebec's food safety authority, issued a public warning Friday in collaboration with Montreal's Food Inspection Division regarding Hummus Halal sold at Marché Sultan, located at 3337 Rue Jarry Est.

The recalled product is Hummus Halal in unitaire format with UPC 2 000856 002997. The affected lot has a packaging date of OC-08-26. The product was sold refrigerated in an aluminum container covered with transparent plastic. The contamination involves generic E. coli — a non-pathogenic strain — but MAPAQ classified the risk as class 1 and issued the warning as a precautionary measure.

Marché Sultan has voluntarily recalled the product. As of Friday, no cases of illness associated with consumption have been reported to MAPAQ. However, contaminated food may show no visible alteration or suspicious odour, so customers should not rely on appearance or smell. Possible symptoms of E. coli contamination include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps of varying intensity, and diarrhea.

Customers who purchased this product should check their packaging date. Anyone with questions can contact MAPAQ at smsaia@mapaq.gouv.qc.ca. The recall reference number is 5812.
