The City of Montreal announced Wednesday it will fund construction of 54 prefabricated transitional housing units in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough for women experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless.

The land on Elmhurst Avenue was transferred from the Société d'habitation du Québec to Communia, a nonprofit partner of the Office municipal d'habitation de Montréal. All eligible residents will receive rent supplements ensuring their contribution equals 25 per cent of their income, with 90 per cent funded by the provincial Ministry of Health and Social Services and 10 per cent by the city.

The Old Brewery Mission will provide on-site support services. The project is part of a coordinated effort between the Quebec government, the City of Montreal, federal partners, and housing organizations to expand shelter capacity and prevent homelessness through stable housing.
