Brendan Gallagher was named an honorary citizen of Montreal on Thursday, marking the end of a storied relationship with the city that began when he was drafted to the Canadiens at age 17.

The Alberta native spent his entire 14-season NHL career with Montreal, playing 911 regular-season games and scoring 246 goals with 241 assists. Known for his gritty playing style and leadership, he became a fan favourite during his time with the team.

At city hall, Gallagher expressed his gratitude to the city and its residents. "This city has given me everything," he said, reflecting on the friendships, professional opportunities, and his family life in Montreal. "In return all I had to do was show up every day, work hard and try to do it with a smile on my face most of the time."

Gallagher announced earlier this month that he would be stepping away from the Canadiens after the team's end-of-season cleanup. He credited Montreal with showing him "nothing but love and support" throughout his career and said the city embodies values he admires: hard work, passion, resilience, and pride.
