A decade and a half after police killed 18-year-old Fredy Villanueva in Montreal North, his death remains central to the city's ongoing reckoning with police violence.

Eighteen years after Fredy Villanueva was shot and killed by Montreal police in Henri-Bourassa Park, his death continues to resonate as a turning point in conversations about policing, racial profiling, and inequality in Montreal North.
Villanueva, 18, was unarmed and playing dice with his older brother and friends on August 9, 2008, when officer Jean-Loup Lapointe fired two bullets that struck him. A vigil the night after his death erupted into riots. Lapointe's partner, Stéphanie Pilotte, was also involved in the incident.
Fo Niemi, executive director of the Centre for Research-Action on Race Relations, called Villanueva's death "Montreal's George Floyd moment" — a watershed for public awareness of police violence against racialized communities.
Québec's Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions announced in December 2008 that no charges would be laid against Lapointe, finding he acted in self-defence. The coroner's inquest, released five years later in 2013, concluded the officer believed he was in danger of being disarmed. Lapointe testified he fired four times, hitting Villanueva twice and two others. The inquest criticized the lack of de-escalation efforts and identified problems with the police investigation.
Cassandra Exumé, general coordinator at Hoodstock, a Black-led organization in Montreal North, was 18 when Villanueva died. "I wasn't naïve anymore," she said. "It changed the way I thought about not only Canada, but Montreal, police officers and racism as a whole."
In 2018, Montreal North created Place de l'Espoir (Hope Place) in honour of Villanueva, though locals also call it "La Place du Désespoir" (Place of Despair). Young people in the neighbourhood today may not know what happened there or that such violence could happen again.
Artist Ricardo Lamour and community organizers collected hundreds of signatures calling for a mural in Henri-Bourassa Park. Plans fell through, but in 2023 artist Monk.E painted "L'innocence de la Nouvelle Maison" (The Innocence of a New Home) — a memorial created with Villanueva's family involved at every step.
