Gas Prices Expected to Drop 8 Cents Friday

Montreal drivers catching a break at the pump as prices dip after weeks of volatile swings across the region.

Drivers across the Greater Montreal area are set to catch a reprieve at the gas pump Friday. After weeks of volatile increases that pushed regular gasoline above 201 cents per litre at stations across the city, prices are expected to drop by as much as 8 cents litre — a move officials are cautioning may be short-lived.

On Thursday, several major stations were posting above-market rates. A Shell location on De Maisonneuve East sat at 203.9 cents per litre; Esso on Décarie at the same price; Petro-Canada in Laval at 201.9 cents. Those fluctuations have been the norm in recent weeks, keeping commuters and families watching the pricing boards closely.

The anticipated Friday drop offers temporary relief, though analysts suggest consumers shouldn't expect the dip to last. Broader market forces — crude pricing, refinery capacity, geopolitical supply factors — continue to drive volatility. The takeaway: fill up when prices are down, and don't count on stability.
