Montréal is bracing for its first heat wave of the summer, with a dangerous stretch of high temperatures and oppressive humidity forecast from Wednesday, July 1, through Saturday, July 4.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Monday warning that daytime highs will reach 30 to 33 C, with humidex values climbing between 40 and 44 C. Overnight lows will stay near 20 C, offering little opportunity for buildings and homes to cool down.

The heat will build through the week. Wednesday is expected to bring mostly cloudy skies with a high of 31 C. Thursday will be the hottest day, reaching 33 C, while Friday will see 31 C under sunny skies and Saturday will remain hot at 30 C.

Health officials warn the prolonged heat could lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, particularly for seniors, young children, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning. The agency recommends checking in on older adults, those living alone, and at-risk people multiple times daily. Residents should drink water frequently, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, seek air-conditioned spaces when possible, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion including headache, nausea, dizziness, and intense fatigue. The City of Montreal has published additional heat management resources on its website.
