Two pulled from Lachine Canal after overnight rescue operation

Two people were recovered from the Lachine Canal following an overnight search involving the Montreal Fire Department and the Canadian Coast Guard.
The initial call came in at 11:55 p.m. on July 4, after two people were reported to have fallen into the water near Parc René-Lévesque. According to preliminary information, one person fell into the water and the second attempted to rescue them. The fire department said it could not confirm the exact circumstances of the incident or the ages and genders of the victims.
Approximately 20 to 30 responders took part in the operation. Two fire department vessels and a Canadian Coast Guard vessel alternated during the search. Using sonar aboard one of its boats, crews located and recovered both victims, who were then turned over to Urgences-santé for treatment and transport. The fire department said it could not confirm whether the two victims had died.
The operation concluded at approximately 2:02 a.m. on July 5.
