A Quebec man charged last year with facilitating a terrorist activity has been released from the Canadian Armed Forces, the Department of National Defence confirmed Wednesday, August 5.
Marc-Aurèle Chabot, who reached the rank of corporal while serving at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier near Quebec City, is no longer a member of the military. Defence spokesperson Cheryl Forrest declined to provide further details about the release, citing privacy protections under the Privacy Act.
Chabot was one of three Quebec men charged in July 2025 with allegedly participating in what the RCMP described as an anti-government extremist plot in the Quebec City area. The RCMP alleged the accused planned to create an anti-government militia and took concrete steps to facilitate terrorist activity. Chabot faces charges including illegal storage of firearms, possession of explosives, and possession of prohibited devices. None of the allegations against him have been proven in court, and he has not entered a plea.
A fourth suspect facing weapons charges remains an active Canadian Armed Forces member but is not performing military duties, Forrest said. The military had previously confirmed Chabot's service at Valcartier when he was charged last summer. The three men charged with terrorism-related offences were denied bail in Quebec City court and remain in custody pending trial.
