McGill University has dropped outside the world's top 50 research institutions for the first time in recent years, according to the 2026 National Taiwan University (NTU) Rankings released this week. The university ranked 53rd with a score of 63.5, down from 50th place and a score of 64.4 in 2025.
The NTU Rankings evaluate thousands of universities worldwide based purely on research output and citation impact—published studies, citation counts, and academic influence. The rankings do not measure campus life or student experience.
McGill's research output grew more slowly in 2026 than peer institutions, including other Canadian schools. Historically, McGill has been Quebec's flagship entry on global university rankings and routinely landed among the world's top research institutions.
Other Canadian universities showed mixed movement. University of Toronto maintained its position at 4th place, the highest-ranked Canadian institution. University of British Columbia improved slightly to 32nd from 33rd. University of Alberta rose to 85th from 88th. Université de Montréal climbed to 109th from 116th.
On the Shanghai Ranking—the Academic Ranking of World Universities—McGill stood at 73rd in 2026, having fluctuated between 70th and 76th over the past five years. The university has not publicly responded to the latest rankings decline.
