Montreal's Olympic Stadium is moving into its next major phase: the new roof will be lifted into place this fall, likely November or December, marking a critical milestone in the $870 million renovation that has kept the facility closed.
The original retractable roof never worked as intended. The fixed roof installed in the late 1990s tore and leaked for two decades, forcing closures whenever snow accumulated. Olympic Park confirmed in July that roof replacement is progressing on schedule and within budget, with $550 million spent to date and remaining work expected to come in at the planned cost.
The new glass ring is expected to be fully installed by the end of 2027, with roof work as a whole finishing by spring 2028. But the stadium won't open its doors immediately after. Interior modernization, authorized by the Quebec government in July, will redesign stands to bring fans closer to action, upgrade concourses and visitor spaces, and rework hospitality areas to match major stadiums elsewhere. The bulk of interior work—new seats and private loges—is expected in 2027, with the public cost of that phase not yet disclosed.
The stadium's main configuration is designed for soccer and football, with a lower bowl capacity of about 32,000, upper level open capacity of 52,000, and concert capacity of 63,000 with fans on the floor. The 400 level has sliding doors to open or close sections depending on crowd size.
Full public reopening could push to 2029 or 2030—one or two years after the roof work wraps up.
