Projet Montréal is calling for a tax on vacant housing to increase the supply of rental units and help alleviate the city's housing crisis.

The proposal would apply to units that are unoccupied for 180 days or more per year. The announcement comes after a Radio-Canada report found nearly 25,000 housing units remain vacant on the Island of Montreal.

The opposition party says the tax would create financial incentive for property owners to bring units back into the rental market, easing pressure on tenants searching for affordable housing.
