The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a Class 1 recall Wednesday for a dozen organic cheese products from Fromagerie L'Ancêtre, a Quebec cheesemaker, plus two retail brands carrying the same contaminated products. A Class 1 recall means eating the affected products poses a reasonable chance of serious health problems.

Three brands are affected: L'Ancêtre, Farm Boy and Life Smart. The contamination is Listeria monocytogenes. Products are distributed nationally and include L'Ancêtre Organic Swiss Cheese (200 g and 1 kg sizes), L'Ancêtre Organic Cheddar Cheese (shredded, in 2 kg and multiple small sizes), L'Ancêtre Organic Mozza-Cheddar Shredded Cheese Blend (200 g), L'Ancêtre Organic Mozzarella Cheese shredded partially skimmed (1 kg), L'Ancêtre Organic Cheddar shredded medium (2 kg), Life Smart Organic Part Skim Mozzarella (200 g), and four Farm Boy Organic varieties including Swiss, Medium Cheddar, Old Cheddar and Extra Sharp Cheddar (all 190-200 g).

The CFIA triggered the recall based on its own test results. Consumers should not eat these products. Check package codes, UPCs and best-before dates against the full recall list on the CFIA website. Return affected products to the store where purchased.

This is the second major Quebec cheese recall in six weeks. In August, Laiterie de Coaticook recalled several cheese products over potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, classified as a Class 1 recall.

Listeria can cause severe illness in pregnant people, newborns, older adults and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches and nausea.
