More than 55,000 Hydro-Québec customers were without power Friday morning after severe thunderstorms swept through southern Quebec the previous day, with the Laurentians, Lanaudière, and Montérégie hit hardest.
Temperatures were expected to climb above 30°C again Friday, with a heat index near 40. Hydro-Québec said weather conditions may have caused power lines to fall in certain areas and urged people not to touch downed lines, as they may still be live even when on the ground. The utility asked residents who spot downed power lines to call 911.
In Ontario, Hydro One also reported tens of thousands of customers without power Friday morning. Environment Canada issued yellow heat advisories across the region, including parts of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.
Temperatures and humidity are expected to begin dropping Saturday morning. Saturday will be mainly sunny with a high of 28°C and a humidex of 30, with nighttime temperatures dipping below 20°C.
