Montreal is under a severe weather warning Thursday with a potential tornado risk as a fast-moving system brings dangerous conditions to the island through the evening.

Environment Canada issued a Yellow Watch for severe thunderstorms at 9:40 a.m., flagging strong wind gusts up to 70 km/h out of the southwest, large hail, and heavy rain that could reach 20 to 40 mm. The agency noted a slight risk of a tornado associated with the system.

Utility outages are possible, and damage to roofs, fences, branches and soft shelters could occur. Heavy rain may trigger flash flooding and reduce visibility. Anyone on the water should avoid nautical activities due to sudden, severe wind gusts.

As of Thursday morning, Montreal sat at 17°C with light rain, humidity at 98%, and southeast winds gusting to 35 km/h. Conditions are expected to deteriorate through the afternoon and evening.

Showers continue through Saturday, with another thunderstorm possible Friday afternoon. Sunday brings mainly cloudy skies as rain tapers off. Monday is forecast to be the first genuinely nice day of the stretch, sunny with a high of 26°C.
