Starbucks is closing 8 locations across Quebec, including two in Montreal, as part of a broader North American cutback announced this week by the company's chief operating officer.
The Montreal closures affect stores at 220 rue Peel in Griffintown and 751 avenue du Mont-Royal Est in Plateau-Mont-Royal. Outside the city, closures reach Baie-Saint-Paul, Brossard, Sainte-Sophie, Donnacona, Saint-Hubert, Belœil, Val-d'Or, and Contrecœur. The cuts will eliminate approximately 100 jobs across Quebec.
The closures are part of CEO Brian Niccol's plan announced last year to shutter more than 430 stores across Canada and the U.S. COO Mike Grams confirmed Thursday that roughly 250 coffeehouses would close "later that week," representing approximately 1% of Starbucks' more than 18,000 North American locations. Globally, the company is eliminating approximately 900 corporate positions.
Employees at affected locations have the option to transfer to nearby Starbucks where positions are available, or receive severance packages if they cannot or choose not to relocate. The company also announced menu adjustments across Canada.
Store evaluations are conducted annually based on performance metrics and lease expirations, the company said.
