The Montreal Victoire's keeper replica of the Walter Cup championship trophy has been found and returned to the team after being lost during shipment, the Professional Women's Hockey League announced Monday.
The trophy went missing last week when it failed to arrive in Lethbridge, Alberta, where it was scheduled to spend time with Victoire forward Dara Greig. A shipping container did arrive, but not the one containing the trophy. The PWHL provided few details about the recovery, thanking "everyone who helped track it down and to our fans for their concern and support."
The missing trophy was not the championship cup presented on the ice when Montreal won in May. That original sterling silver Tiffany & Co.-designed Walter Cup is permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. What went missing was the team's "keeper" cup — a replica weighing about 35 pounds and standing about 24 inches tall — that travels among players during the offseason.
Montreal won the Walter Cup by defeating Ottawa in Game 4 of a best-of-five series in May to become the PWHL's first Canadian champion. Minnesota won the league's first two titles. The trophy is named after PWHL founder Mark Walter and his wife, Kimbra. Walter owns the Los Angeles Dodgers and recently agreed to sell his controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers.
The PWHL said the cup was "lost in shipment" and worked with its shipping company to locate it. "Turns out, even the Walter Cup can have a little offseason adventure," the league said in a statement.
