Bluesfest wraps strongest run in 32 years with 30,000-plus nights and consistent crowds

Ottawa Bluesfest closed out one of its most successful editions in its 32-year history, with CEO and co-founder Mark Monahan crediting his experienced full-time staff and about 2,000 volunteers for executing a flawless operation.

The festival ran July 9–19 on the grounds of the Canadian War Museum at LeBreton Flats Park. Multiple nights drew crowds exceeding 30,000, including the July 17 triple bill of Ella Langley, Sheryl Crow, and viral act Angine de Poitrine, when Langley announced 40,000 from the stage—a figure Monahan noted was likely an exaggeration.

Other high-attendance nights featured headliners including The Lumineers, Limp Bizkit, Gwen Stefani, Cody Johnson, and Hardy. Monahan said country music has been a particularly strong draw, pulling fans from across the Ottawa Valley.

Weather cooperated for most of the run. Aside from brief downpours and stretches of heat, evenings were pleasant, resulting in consistent turnout each night. The main source of complaints was the unannounced deployment of Canada Day fireworks on July 9, opening night, which caused disruptions and disappointed some attendees who missed the show.

Site improvements enhanced the experience for general-admission attendees. A reconfiguration shifted most food vendors from the middle of the field to the street level, transforming Kichi Zībī Mīkan into a lively zone with big screens and speakers, allowing better crowd flow and sightlines to the main stage.

Monahan emphasized the festival's commitment to the general-admission base—roughly 20,000 people buying full-festival passes who return annually. VIP buyers represent less than five per cent of attendees.
