The National Arts Centre is hosting a Powwow Workout — a free, high-energy fitness session that fuses traditional powwow dance steps with contemporary and traditional powwow music.

The 45-minute class takes place Monday, June 8 at noon on the Canal Lobby Stage at the NAC, 1 Elgin Street. It's led by Amanda Fox, an Ojibwe artist and lifelong powwow dancer with over 30 years of experience.

Fox will introduce the history and cultural context of powwows throughout the session and respond to questions as participants move through the workout. The class is designed to be simple and easy to follow — no prior dance experience needed.

According to Fox, a powwow is a gathering to celebrate First Nations culture through dance, songs, food, and crafts, and is open to all. "The Pow Wow Workout is an innovative fitness experience blending pow wow dance, storytelling, and Zumba to promote holistic wellness and cultural learning," Fox said.

It's free, no tickets required — just show up and move. A perfect Monday lunch-hour break that doubles as a cultural education and a solid workout.
