Amanda Fox, an Ojibwe dancer and cultural advocate with over 30 years of powwow experience, is leading a free Powwow Workout at the National Arts Centre on Monday, June 1 at noon at the Canal Lobby Stage (1 Elgin Street). The 45-minute high-intensity fitness class blends powwow dance steps from multiple dance styles with contemporary and traditional powwow music in a simple, follow-along format.

Fox will introduce the history and cultural context of powwows throughout the session and respond to questions. A powwow is a gathering open to all that celebrates First Nations culture through dance, songs, food, and crafts.

Fox, a proud member of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory and current Ottawa resident, created Powwow Workout as an innovative way to promote holistic wellness and cultural learning. Through workshops, classes, and community outreach across Canada, she invites participants to connect with Indigenous traditions, move with intention, and embrace balanced, healthy lives.

The class is free and requires no registration or ticket—drop in at the Canal Lobby Stage at noon. No prior powwow knowledge or fitness level is required.
