Ottawa fire crews responded to three separate blazes across the city in less than 12 hours, resulting in two pet deaths and the displacement of six people.
The first fire started around 7:02 p.m. on Tuesday in a seventh-floor unit at 100 McLeod Street in Centretown. Firefighters found a person in the lobby suffering from smoke inhalation. One dog and one cat were found dead inside the unit. The fire was contained to that single unit and brought under control by 7:16 p.m. Two people were displaced.
Just after midnight, a kitchen fire broke out in a townhouse at 100 Tacom Circle in Barrhaven. Residents were outside when crews arrived, but two cats were still inside. Firefighters rescued both cats and extinguished the flames, which were confined to the kitchen. A thermal imaging camera confirmed the fire did not spread behind walls. The blaze was under control by 12:36 a.m.
The final call came at 4:30 a.m. from a two-storey townhouse at 700 Belisle Street in Vanier South. Heavy smoke was coming from the second floor when crews arrived. Multiple people needed treatment for smoke inhalation. Firefighters extinguished the flames by 4:51 a.m., containing the fire before it spread to other units. Two adults and two children were displaced.
Ottawa fire investigators were dispatched to each scene to determine how the fires started.
