Orléans brewery closes after decade in business, citing rising costs and mounting pressures

Orléans Brewing Co. closed its doors Wednesday, August 5, ending a decade of business in the suburb. Owners announced the closure on social media, describing it as a "difficult decision" driven by forces largely out of their hands.

"Rising costs, increased rent, mounting pressures and circumstances beyond our control have left us with no other path forward," the owners wrote in their farewell post.

Since opening in 2016, the brewery became a neighbourhood anchor. "First dates turn into marriages, kids grow up at these tables, milestones toasted over pints," owners said, reflecting on the relationships formed at the venue.

Community members responded with an outpouring of support and shared memories. Cindy Strugnell wrote of her Wednesday cycling group, which had made the brewery's patio its gathering spot: "Best wishes for a resilient future, it must be so hard for you and you will be missed." Another commenter, Dennis Lapin, wrote: "The brewing tanks may fall silent, but the friendships, the laughter, the music, the conversations and the memories you've given your community will continue to echo for years to come."

Owners described their customers as making the brewery a "second living room," warm and familiar "and full of stories we'll carry with us forever."

This marks the second Ottawa-area brewery closure this year. Kichesippi Beer Co. shut down in March, citing ongoing financial difficulties.

OBC owners did not respond to requests for further comment about their closure or future plans.
