Jeff Leiper, Ottawa's mayoral frontrunner, spent Friday afternoon in the hospital after a scooter crash that left him sore and bruised.

The councillor fell while riding alone in a late-morning accident he described on social media as "gnarly." Two drivers stopped to help and took him to The Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Leiper's campaign confirmed he was wearing a helmet and no other vehicles were involved. His media representative said he's resting over the weekend and won't comment further until next week.

On social media Friday, Leiper thanked the strangers who stopped to help, calling them "like a friend and neighbour." He also reminded Ottawa residents to wear helmets. The day before the crash, he'd posted on Bluesky that his new scooter had just arrived and he was "in my happy place."
