Firefighters pulled an unresponsive resident from a burning apartment on Lockhart Avenue in Carlingwood around 5:30 p.m. Sunday and performed CPR that restored vital signs while other crews contained the blaze.
Crew members arrived in four minutes of the call after a dispatcher reported heavy smoke from the top floor of the multi-unit building with someone trapped inside. Firefighters heard fire alarms and saw smoke at the back of the structure. One resident had already escaped but told officials another person was still inside.
Inside the smoke-filled apartment, firefighters found the occupant with no vital signs and began CPR immediately. The procedure restored the person's pulse and breathing. The fire was contained to the kitchen and brought under control within 20 minutes of arrival. Crews completed two full searches of the building and checked behind the stove for fire extension to confirm no one else remained inside.
Three people were hospitalized. The resident pulled from the fire and another who escaped the building are in hospital. A third person, an older adult, was treated on-site for minor smoke inhalation and did not require hospitalization. Residents in other apartments within the building will not be displaced.
