Gastops, an Ottawa aircraft diagnostics firm, is opening a 50,000-square-foot research, development and manufacturing hub in Riverside South near Limebank Road. The company currently operates from a 27,000-square-foot facility on Polytek Street in Gloucester.

Chief executive Shaun Horning told the Ottawa Business Journal that the current building, a former office converted to lab and manufacturing space in the early 1980s, has become cramped. "It's just going to be a much more welcoming environment. You can only remodel so much," he said. He added, "We believe we're going to fill that building up soon and (will) need some space to add to that."

The company employs 210 people and plans to hire dozens more over the next few years, citing increased defence spending as the driver of expected growth. Gastops makes diagnostic tools for commercial and military aircraft.

The new facility will house engineering, research and development, manufacturing and corporate functions under one roof. Construction began in August 2025, with occupancy expected next spring. Gastops bought the 6.2-acre parcel four years ago, and the land is close to the Limebank LRT station and Ottawa's airport. The project cost is described as "tens of millions" of dollars, with no exact figure given.

The company's research focuses on engine lubricant condition assessment and sensor technologies for sustainable aviation fuels.
