Police arrested 17 people in a targeted enforcement operation aimed at stopping retail theft at a downtown Rideau Street business.

The Central District Neighbourhood Resource Team worked with the store's loss prevention staff between July 12 and August 18, conducting patrols at various times throughout the period. The operation resulted in 17 criminal charges, one executed search warrant, and seven Provincial Offence Notices.

Police did not identify the business or provide details about the people arrested or the specific charges they face.

"Businesses are encouraged to continue reporting theft-related incidents and suspicious activity to police," Ottawa police said in their release.

The enforcement reflects ongoing pressure on downtown retailers from retail theft. Similar operations have targeted the ByWard Market area in recent weeks, as police prioritize complaints from business owners struggling with inventory loss.
