Ottawa police made three arrests Friday afternoon during a targeted patrol of the George and Cumberland street area, where officers were responding to community complaints about violence and public disorder.
Around 3:30 p.m., officers saw two men fighting. One tried to stab the other, missed, then picked up a piece of furniture and threw it at the victim's face. Police intervened and arrested the 30-year-old suspect, who was charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon dangerous to the public peace, and unlawfully possessing a Schedule I substance.
Just over an hour later, the same patrol spotted two people exhibiting behavior consistent with drug trafficking. Officers arrested both—a 24-year-old woman and 26-year-old man. One tried to run but was caught. Police seized a substantial quantity of crack cocaine and methamphetamine. Both were charged with possession of a Schedule I substance (two counts each) and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime not exceeding $5,000.
Superintendent Kenneth Bryden said local residents, business owners, and community members had expressed strong support for the heightened police presence. The patrol was the second enforcement of this kind in the area; the first took place August 11 and resulted in more than two dozen charges, including theft and weapons violations. Police and city workers cleaned up the area after that initial operation.
The victim of the stabbing attempt was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
