Police seek suspect in hate-motivated assault in Woodridge

A man forcibly removed a woman's hijab and threw an umbrella at her Saturday afternoon in an unprovoked attack, police say.

Ottawa police are asking for the public's help locating a suspect in a hate-motivated assault that occurred Saturday afternoon, June 20, in the 100 block of Woodridge Crescent.

At approximately 3 p.m., a man approached a woman without provocation, uttered a racial slur, and forcibly removed her hijab before throwing an umbrella at her. The suspect, whom the victim did not know, then fled on foot. Police say the woman was not physically injured.

The West Criminal Investigations Section and Hate Crime Unit are investigating.
