Cyclist in critical condition after Sussex and Bruyère collision Monday

An adult male cyclist was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Sussex Drive and Bruyère Street on Monday, Sept. 14, at 8:45 a.m. Ottawa paramedics transported the cyclist to hospital in critical condition, though a paramedic spokesperson said the injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Ottawa Police Service closed a lane and a road in the area and asked residents to avoid the intersection and take alternate routes. Police have not released details about the circumstances of the collision or the identity of the vehicle driver.

This collision follows at least three other incidents involving cyclists in Ottawa in recent months. HighOnCity reported in June that a biker was hit twice in one night on Sussex and Elgin; in August a cyclist was struck near Rideau Canal pathway and crashed into a barrier; and on Aug. 26, a cyclist was hospitalized with minor injuries after being struck on Laurier Avenue near Bay Street.

The city approved a Protected Intersection Design Guide in September 2021 to provide guidance on designing safer intersections. The City of Ottawa has roadway across many areas experiencing frequent speeding and harsh braking that create risky hotspots.
