Tow operators across Ontario must now register and report vehicle removals from private residences and business properties through a new provincial system, the Ottawa Police Service announced.

The requirement aims to increase accountability within the towing industry and combat vehicle theft. Police have encountered stolen vehicles in tow yards and storage facilities during investigations; timely reporting helps track vehicle movements and identify suspicious activity.

Tow operators must obtain customer consent before towing, provide a Consent to Tow form with rate information and consumer rights, and ensure invoices are itemized and complete. Public reminders include the right to choose your tow company (unless directed by police), contacting your insurance company before authorizing a tow, never signing blank contracts, requesting written estimates, and verifying the operator's identity. Complaints about towing services can be filed with the Ministry of Transportation.
