A rugby park in Ottawa's west end is closed after a structure fire damaged the facility Friday morning.

Ottawa Fire Services responded to Twin Elm Rugby Park in the 4000 block of Twin Elm Road in Richmond at around 9:37 a.m. on August 28 after receiving reports of heavy black smoke from a building. When firefighters arrived, alarms were sounding and smoke was pouring from the structure. Crews immediately shut off several large propane tanks located beside the building.

Firefighters entered the smoke-filled structure and located flames inside a mechanical room. They opened sections of the building to expose and extinguish the fire, which was declared under control at 10:08 a.m. No one was inside the building at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Ottawa Fire Services completed extensive ventilation operations to clear smoke from the structure. An investigator was dispatched to determine the fire's cause and point of origin. A fire watch crew remained on scene to monitor for any flare-ups.

In a social media post, Twin Elm Rugby Park said the facility would remain closed until further notice. "Everyone is safe," the facility said, adding that it would keep the rugby community updated as the situation develops. The fire investigator's findings on the cause and the timeline for reopening have not yet been disclosed.
