Provincial police stopped two older drivers for driving the wrong direction on Highway 417 in separate incidents on Monday.
Just before 5 p.m., officers responded to a vehicle travelling the wrong way on Highway 416 and 417. The vehicle was found near Pinecrest Road, where it "narrowly" avoided a head-on crash. A 90-year-old driver from Kanata was suspended from driving.
Later that evening, a second incident unfolded near Anderson Road during a highway closure caused by a vehicle fire in an eastbound lane. A 75-year-old man, impatient with the delay, drove eastbound in the westbound lanes instead. Police stopped the vehicle and charged him with careless driving, which carries a $490 fine and six demerit points.
Both incidents underscored the dangers of confused or inattentive driving on busy highways during disruptions.
