The University of Ottawa has launched a micro-program in real estate, the first of its kind in the region, designed for students completing a bachelor of commerce at the Telfer School of Management.
The program focuses on the development and management side of the real estate industry, with courses in finance and sustainability. Launching in September, it includes learning opportunities such as tours of development sites, case competitions, and networking with local executives.
Dean Stéphane Brutus said the need was so acute that the program moved through six levels of approval in a single year — rarely seen at a university. "Both the business community and the student community were asking this of us," Brutus told the Ottawa Business Journal. Local executives expressed a need for entry-level talent with real estate-specific knowledge, allowing new graduates to accelerate their development rather than spending a year or two learning real estate fundamentals on the job.
With a surge in development activity and an ongoing housing crisis, student interest in the sector has been high. A group of students already launched a real estate club and organized site visits and guest speakers on their own initiative.
