Ottawa police have charged Viktor Konokhov, 63, with first-degree murder in connection with the disappearance of his wife, Olga Konokhova, 64, who has been missing since January.
Olga last made contact with someone in the winter, and circumstances around her disappearance were considered suspicious from the start. Her remains have not been found, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police are describing this as a femicide — the killing of women and girls because of their gender. It is the second femicide in Ottawa this year and the sixth homicide overall.
The charge underscores a broader pattern of violence against women in the capital. In 2025, there were 7,840 reported incidents of intimate partner violence — a 6 per cent increase year-over-year. About 80 per cent of victims in those incidents were women or girls. That amounts to roughly 21 calls per day related to intimate partner violence, up from an average of 18 calls a day in 2024. Four femicides were recorded in 2025.
