U.S. Democratic Senator Adam Schiff on Sunday rebuked President Trump over his threats to impose additional tariffs on Canada related to wildfires, highlighting what he called Trump's lack of diplomatic decorum.

Trump had earlier accused Canada of poor forest management and threatened tariffs over what he described as "willful negligence" in preventing wildfires that blanketed Ontario and northern U.S. states with smoke. He called the costs "incalculable" and said the expense of the resulting pollution must be added to tariffs Canada is already paying.

"When California was burning, Canada sent firefighters, planes and assistance — not insults," Schiff wrote in a social media post. "I was proud to meet them, and to thank them, when they would break for dinner."

"As California and other states step up to repay the favour, we should do so without the threats and ramblings of a failing leader," he added. "We should show some humanity."

Despite the tensions, Trump was spotted Sunday watching the FIFA World Cup final match from a glassed-in suite alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Carney had earlier brushed off the U.S. criticism during a Thursday news conference in London, Ontario, saying Canada is pursuing investments in clean energy while the U.S. is actively working against clean energy.
