A Democrat senator from California is calling on Quebec to lift restrictions on the importation and sale of American wine, saying Canada's boycott is causing devastating harm to U.S. winegrowers.

Adam Schiff referred to a letter he sent to Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette in June, highlighting the issue in a social media post Thursday. Schiff said California does not agree with U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff wars, but winegrowers in his state are paying the price for Canada's response.

Some provincial liquor boards stopped purchasing American alcohol last year in response to Trump's tariffs and threats of annexation. While Saskatchewan and Alberta have resumed stocking U.S. alcohol, major purchasing provinces like Ontario and Quebec have not.

The wine ban has become a pressure point between both political parties in the United States. A Republican congresswoman for New York introduced legislation this week to investigate the booze bans.
