Third party advertisers supporting Alberta separation have extended their fundraising lead to over $458,000, vastly outpacing federalist groups just three months ahead of the October 19 referendum.
Elections Alberta's latest contribution figures, updated July 18, show 15 separatist advertisers have raised over $458,000, compared with six federalist groups who have garnered just under $94,000 in contributions — an advantage of more than $365,000, up by about $40,000 from the previous week.
Separatist group Let Alberta Decide continues to lead all advertisers, standing at $256,708 in the most recent update, including nearly $23,000 in contributions over the most recent week-long reporting period. The group, led by lawyer Keith Wilson, accounts for nearly half of all contributions made to third party advertisers. Separatist groups currently account for seven of the top 10 highest contribution totals to date.
The top-raising federalist group so far has been Alberta's Voice, led by veteran political strategist Stephen Carter, which has received more than $51,000 in contributions.
So far, 23 advertisers have registered with Elections Alberta, though seven have yet to report any contributions. Advertisers have no limit on what they can raise but are permitted to spend a maximum of $607,000 on referendum advertising. Contributions from individuals, corporations or unions are capped at a combined $5,000 a year.
