Julian Alvarez sent Argentina into the World Cup semifinals with a long-range strike in the 112th minute against Switzerland, securing a 3-1 victory on Saturday night in Kansas City.
Alexis Mac Allister also scored off a corner kick from Lionel Messi, with Lautaro Martinez adding a goal late in extra time. The defending champion will face England on Wednesday in Atlanta after the Three Lions beat Norway 2-1 earlier on Saturday.
Messi's pursuit of a second World Cup title continues, though his nine-game World Cup scoring streak ended in the match.
The game turned on a controversial call midway through the second half. Switzerland had just tied the score 1-1 on Dan Ndoye's goal in the 67th minute when Leandro Paredes was shown a yellow card for a tackle. Video review showed the Swiss player fell before Paredes made contact — Breel Embolo was sent off instead for a second yellow card, leaving Switzerland to defend with 10 players for the remainder of the match. It was the second time the "mistaken identity" protocol was used at the World Cup to overturn an incorrect card.
