British Columbia Premier David Eby is in China this week on his first-ever trade mission, focused on pitching the province's forestry products and LNG expansion.

The central prize is the second phase of LNG Canada's massive facility expansion in Kitimat. The $28 billion project is approaching a final investment decision in September, and Eby plans to meet with PetroChina—one of four nations in the LNG consortium—to address any final concerns.

Eby said China is the province's second-largest trading partner, and he aims to double international trade over the coming decade. U.S. tariffs are "really hurting" the forestry sector, and he hopes to see Chinese tariffs lifted, including those on seafood.

The Premier received briefings from the RCMP and Canadian Security Intelligence Service before departing to minimize risk. The government withheld the full itinerary to avoid giving competitors in other provinces and countries an "unfair advantage" in drumming up deals.
