Major fire at CFB Wainwright affects military personnel in east-central Alberta

A major fire ignited in the training area of CFB Wainwright on Saturday, October 17, and spread rapidly beyond the facility's boundaries. Strong winds pushed the fire across the base, which sits about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton and serves as one of Canada's largest military training facilities.

Premier Danielle Smith called it a "significant and tragic fire" affecting "many of our brave military personnel." Prime Minister Mark Carney described it as "a serious incident creating a major fire" at CFB Wainwright, adding that federal and provincial governments were in close contact.

Emergency Health Services personnel were on scene supporting care and transport. The Municipal District of Wainwright issued a public advisory asking residents to avoid the area, keep roads clear for emergency vehicles, and refrain from traveling toward the incident or attempting to view it.

As of reporting time, authorities had not released information about the fire's cause, the extent of damage, or whether anyone was injured. The number of people evacuated or affected remains unclear, and the current status of fire containment efforts has not been confirmed.
