Four Canadian Armed Forces members were killed and 39 others were injured in a fire-related training incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta on Oct. 17, the Canadian Armed Forces said in a news release. The incident happened at approximately 4 p.m. MDT. Of the injured, 19 are in critical condition.
The fire ignited in a training area and spread rapidly beyond it, according to reporting on the event. A National Defence official said the incident was under investigation and that there were no indications of terrorist activity.
The Union of National Defence Employees organized a Canada-wide "Red Shirt" day on Oct. 23 to honour the dead and injured, and the union has since criticized a Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services email that declined to endorse the initiative.
