The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission sent a letter Wednesday to Rogers questioning a $5 monthly price increase appearing on customer bills as a "Wireless Plan Rate Adjustment" starting on or after July 15, 2026.

CRTC vice president of consumer, analytics and strategy Scott Hutton wrote to Rogers' VP of telecom seeking clarification on whether the increase violates the Wireless Code, which prohibits changing key contract terms without express consent from account holders. Hutton asked Rogers to answer questions by no later than July 3, 2026.

The increase affects both longer-term contract holders and month-to-month customers. Some Fido customers on a $25/80GB bring-your-own-phone promotional plan signed up in March will see their bill climb to $30/month in July.

Hutton requested Rogers clarify whether it is imposing the fee during customers' ongoing commitment period and how the company presented the mandatory charge to account holders. Rogers has framed the increase as a separate item under "Monthly Charges" on bills, suggesting it is not part of the minimum monthly charge itself.

It's an unusual intervention from the CRTC, which does not typically weigh in on price increases. The move signals a potentially more hands-on regulatory approach, following other recent letters the commission has sent to carriers over new fees.
