A driver has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act after stopping for a turtle on Highway 60 triggered a two-vehicle collision that closed the roadway for several hours. On June 10 around 6 p.m., Ontario Provincial Police responded to the crash near North Algona-Wilberforce Township. An eastbound vehicle slowed or stopped on the live road while a turtle crossed.

A car travelling behind was unable to brake in time and struck the stopped vehicle from behind. The collision forced the highway to close while police investigated and crews cleaned up debris. The Ottawa driver has been charged.

OPP emphasized that stopping in a live traffic lane poses significant risk to the driver and other road users. "Should you encounter wildlife on the roadway, do not stop in traffic lanes," the police service said in a statement. "Contact police if assistance is needed."
