Two corrections officers and an inmate died Thursday during a transfer from the Edmonton Institution for Women, Correctional Service Canada announced.
The agency described the incident as a "tragic accident" but did not disclose the circumstances of the deaths, the date and time they occurred, or the names of those who died.
The Edmonton Institution for Women is a multi-level facility in the city's west end that accommodates minimum- and medium-security inmates.
"Our colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty served Canadians with professionalism, dedication, and courage," Correctional Service Canada said in a statement. "Their commitment to public safety and to CSC's mission leaves a lasting legacy, and we will ensure their invaluable contributions to our country are never forgotten."
The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers said it is mourning the deaths of its members. Condolences have come from agencies and officials across the country, including Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who said he was "saddened" to learn of the officers' deaths and that they and their colleagues are owed "a debt of gratitude" for keeping Canadians safe.
