The medical drama The Pitt dominated the Emmy nominations announced this week, earning 25 mentions including a nod for Canadian creator R. Scott Gemmill in the best series drama category.

The HBO Max show, now in its second season and available on Crave in Canada, follows the grueling shifts of emergency-room professionals at a fictional Pittsburgh hospital. The series made a dramatic debut last year, winning multiple major awards including best drama, best actor for Noah Wyle and best supporting actress for Katherine LaNasa.

This year, the show expanded its reach across acting categories. Wyle and LaNasa are again nominated. Toronto-based actress Brittany Allen earned a nomination for best guest actress in a drama series for her role in The Pitt.

Beyond Allen, three other Canadians secured Emmy recognition. Actor Michael J. Fox is nominated for a guest role in Apple TV+'s Shrinking (Thérapie vérité). Graham Yost, executive producer of Slow Horses (Les déshonorés), earned a nomination. Martin Short was recognized for his comedy role in Disney+'s Only Murders in the Building.

In the comedy category, Hacks claimed second place with 24 nominations for its fifth and final season. Lead actress Jean Smart, who has won in her category for four consecutive seasons, is nominated once again — a fifth win would be unprecedented. Her longtime co-star Hannah Einbinder, who won last year in the best supporting actress category, earned her fifth nomination. Series co-creator Paul W. Downs also received a nomination.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony will take place September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, broadcast on NBC. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star Mariska Hargitay will host the event.
