Transportation Minister Steven MacKinnon has directed Alto, the Crown corporation overseeing Canada's high-speed rail project, to consider adding a stop in Kingston, Ontario.

The federal government is funding a high-speed rail route linking Quebec City and Toronto with an estimated cost of $60 to $90 billion. Construction on the first leg between Ottawa and Montreal is expected to begin in 2029 or 2030.

The project is facing pushback from farmers and rural residents along the proposed route, who say it could limit road access and separate farmland. The Kingston stop could address concerns from that region, though no timeline for a decision was announced.

Alto is a Crown corporation established in 2022 to manage the project. The government has not detailed how the Kingston station would affect overall timelines or costs.
