Indigo released its best-books list for 2026, selected by more than 150 employees. The retailer has been compiling annual best-books lists since at least 2012, and this year's top 10 carries four Canadian authors.

Number one is Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke, a novel about a traditional American wife and mother who shares her seemingly idyllic pioneer-inspired lifestyle on social media before suddenly waking in the brutal reality of 1855. The book has been a #booktok sensation and is being adapted into a film after actress and producer Anne Hathaway bought the rights in April.

Number two is Eliza Sunshine by Michelle Good, a multigenerational family saga inspired by the author's mother, Martha Eliza Soonias Stiff. The novel follows three generations of Indigenous women navigating colonial violence, intergenerational trauma, survival and resilience. Good's debut novel, Five Little Indians, won the 2020 Governor General's Literary Award for fiction and was shortlisted for the Scotiabank Giller Prize.

At number three is Exit Party by Emily St. John Mandel. Set in post-collapse Los Angeles in 2031, the novel follows recently released ex-convict Ari Waker, who attends a post-curfew party where the host mysteriously vanishes and people from parallel timelines begin to appear. St. John Mandel has published seven novels, including The Glass Hotel and Station Eleven, which was adapted into a critically acclaimed HBO miniseries in 2021.

The list also includes Murdoku: Around the World by Manuel Garand, a puzzle book combining Sudoku-style puzzles with murder mystery elements. According to Indigo, the book has sold one million copies in print. The American Way of Killing by Malcolm Gladwell, a work of non-fiction, rounds out the selections named in the source.

Indigo has dubbed the titles "Guaranteed Reads," meaning customers can return any book if they don't love it.
