Japanese game studio Arc System Works, known for the fighting game series Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ, is bringing Marvel superheroes into an anime-inspired fighting game launching later this summer.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls reimagines classic Marvel characters through a distinctly Japanese lens. Iron Man wears gundam-inspired armor complete with a metallic brow ridge. Each hero sports anime-influenced design, from the Avengers to the X-Men. The appeal isn't the fusion of two franchises, as seen in Marvel vs. Capcom—it's the veteran studio bringing its own aesthetic to Marvel's universe.
The game demands building a four-person team, each with unique attacks and abilities. Intimidated newcomers needn't worry: the entire squad shares a single health bar, and players can complete matches without swapping characters, using teammates only for brief assist attacks. Switching characters requires unlocking them—players start each match with two team members available, with additional heroes gradually unlocking as the game progresses, moving faster for the losing player to encourage balance.
Manetting a full team is exhilarating: players genuinely feel like commanding an entire squad rather than controlling one character. The downside is visual chaos. With three teammates available for assist attacks at any time, the screen fills with lasers, strikes, and magical effects that sometimes blur together. It's beautiful and overwhelming.
The game is also a love letter to American comic books. Nearly everything evokes their medium—animations, visual effects, character dialogue, and certain combo attacks display in comic-book panels. Team selection generates names based on chosen characters and leaders. Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls isn't about Japan conquering Marvel; it's about Arc System Works' masters respectfully remixing American superhero culture through their own creative lens.
