One person is dead after being shot by an RCMP officer during a domestic call in Cold Lake Thursday afternoon.

Around 4:48 p.m. on June 25, RCMP responded to a domestic call for service in the northeastern Alberta city. Officers determined that a suspect had a firearm. Two people were able to flee the residence to safety before the altercation escalated.

Police tried to communicate with the individual, but those efforts were unsuccessful. During the altercation that followed, at least one officer fired their service weapon, hitting the suspect. The person was declared dead at the scene. No officers were injured.

Because of the nature of the incident, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been alerted and will conduct an independent investigation. The RCMP has also launched an internal review process that will examine training, policy, police response, and the officer's duty status.
