NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi is leaving Edmonton-Strathcona to run in Calgary during the next provincial election, less than 14 months after winning a byelection in the Edmonton riding.

Nenshi, who became NDP leader in 2024 and replaced former premier Rachel Notley in the Edmonton seat in June 2025, announced Thursday he'll return to Calgary, where he was mayor for 11 years.

"While I've been thrilled every day to serve as your MLA, I will be seeking election in a Calgary riding in the next general election," Nenshi posted on social media. "This will open up Edmonton-Strathcona for a new representative from this beautiful community."

He said he didn't identify which Calgary riding he intends to run in, pending finalized electoral boundaries. He'll remain as Edmonton-Strathcona's MLA until the next campaign.

Nenshi's move follows announcements from four other longtime NDP members who won't seek re-election in 2027, including Calgary-Buffalo MLA Joe Ceci. Alberta's next provincial election is scheduled for October 18, 2027.
