Pierre Draws, a newly retired Montreal resident, won $5 million in the Lotto 6/49 Classic Jackpot on July 4 after buying a ticket on a whim.
When Draws scanned his ticket using the Loto-Québec app, he initially thought he'd won $5,000. Looking closer at the amount, he said, "there were too many zeroes." At Loto-Québec's head office, where he claimed his cheque, Draws reflected on the moment: "Five million doesn't change you, except… It's quite something!"
For Draws, the windfall fulfills a long-held dream. "I think I deserve a house, a more beautiful life for me and my cat," he said. He described feeling like he was "on cloud nine" when accepting his prize.
The winning ticket was purchased at Boni-Soir – Marché Bachir convenience store at 7322 Avenue Baldwin in Anjou. The retailer will receive a one per cent commission of $50,000.
